5th Salzburg AMREF Marathon (May 4, 2008)
The fifth Salzburg AMREF Marathon on May 4, 2008 was dominated by the Kenyan men's runners and led to Sabine Hofer's second triumph in the women's race. In the men's race, John Kiprono from Kenya won in bright sunshine in 2:18:52 hours. At the finish, he was only eleven seconds above Mike Rotich's course record from the previous year. Second place went to Josephat Kiprono Rotich for the third time – the Kenyan competed five times in Salzburg, won two editions and finished second three times. Gerhard Wörndl came in third, making him the best Austrian.
The race seemed to be over for the women, Sheila Kasyoka Mbaku seemed too big. But the young Kenyan made a mistake in the classification of the race and could not keep up her high pace. Second-placed Sabine Hofer came closer and was able to pass the favorite in the last hundred meters. “Actually, I just wanted to run home in second place. I suddenly saw her 500 meters from the finish line and was very surprised. And now I'm just overwhelmed, "said the Salzburg native, overjoyed, about her feelings. After all, it was Hofer's second success at the Salzburg AMREF Marathon.
From an organizational point of view, a lot has changed this year. The ARGE consisting of the agency SportImPuls, AMREF Austria and the ASV/ASKÖ Salzburg was dissolved. The new organizer from 2008 was the Running & Event Club Salzburg. Johannes Langer was solely responsible for organizing the event.
