7th Salzburg AMREF Marathon (May 16, 2010)

With 4,733 registered runners from 44 nations around the world, 2010 was an absolute record year in Salzburg. After missing out on victories last year, the goal for the Kenyan athletes was clear: victories were needed. Thomas Ngelel and Viola Bor-Chepting didn't need to be told twice and with their triumphs on May 16, 2010 they made things clear. Ngelel won in a very good time of 2:20:30 hours ahead of local hero Karl Aumayr (2:25:25 hours). Despite light rain and cool temperatures, Viola Bor-Chepting was unstoppable in the women's race. Her time of 2:39:34 hours not only meant that she had smashed Eva Maria Gradwohl's old course record. At the same time, she crossed the finish line fourth overall, only the first three men were faster than the 32-year-old Kenyan. The performance is all the higher when you consider that the thermometer had just shown 9° Celsius at the beginning of the marathon and a light drizzle started.
