13th Salzburg Marathon (May 1, 2016)
7,283 participants from 77 different nations on all continents - and thus more runners than ever before at Salzburg's largest active sports event - actively participated in the "Get active days" of the 13th Salzburg Marathon. The program provided for eight different competitions and thus contained the optimal challenge for every type of runner.
For the first time in the history of the Salzburg Marathon, an Ethiopian runner was able to enter the list of winners. Timisoara Habtemariam Bekele won in rain during the race in a time of 2:23:11 hours ahead of his compatriot Abay Girma Tadesse. Won with the women Fatuma Usen Tayr an Ethiopian for the second time in a row. It took her 2:39:15 hours to cover the 42.195 kilometers.
For the fifth time in the past ten years, the running festival in the city of Mozart has been commissioned to hold the state championships and Austrian championships of the masters in marathon running. The man from Salzburg was crowned in the men's category Robert Gruber after three silver medals for the first time as state champion. For a long time, the experienced Gruber even kept up with the top duo and finished third in a time of 2:25:17 hours. In the women's category, four-time state champion Karin Freitag and marathon debutant competed Anita Baierl an exciting duel that the Upper Austrian won in a time of 2:42:35 hours.
There were also strong performances in the half marathon: the Somali, who lives in Austria, won the men's race Mohamed Abdirizak Hassan in a time of 1:09:15 hours. The Dutchwoman provided the sporting highlight of the weekend Ruth van der Meiden, which not only set a new course record with a time of 1:13:01 hours, but also secured qualification for the Dutch national team's squad for the European Championship in Amsterdam.
The sporting program "Get active days" extended over three days for the second time in a row and was opened with the new AfterWorkRun. An emotional highlight of the running festival in the city of Mozart was the "Get active" junior marathon with 1,700 active girls and boys in brilliant conditions on Saturday evening.
