16th Salzburg Marathon (May 19, 2019)

As modest as the weather was throughout Europe in May 2019, it was just as glorious on the three days of the Running Festival in the City of Mozart from May 17th to 19th, 2019. 8,501 participants ensured a clear new registration record at Salzburg's largest active sports event. In glorious weather, more spectators than ever before lined the edge of the course on the day of the marathon. The Sports Day on Saturday in the Volksgarten was more popular than ever. For the first time started over 2,000 children and young people in the junior marathon competitions.

The two new locations proved to be a great success and offered the thousands of runners from Salzburg, Austria and 80 nations from all continents an excellent stage for a memorable running experience. The sporting competitions on Friday and Saturday took place in the public garden across the stage, in the nearby ice arena, the SportMall@Salzburg Marathon took place. On Sunday, the start and finish of the main competitions celebrated their return to the classic old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The finish before Great Festival Hall with the exclusive perspective of the Hohensalzburg Fortress formed the emotional high point for all marathon, half marathon, 10 km and relay runners.

The most prominent participant in the history of the Salzburg Marathon won the marathon. The Kenyan came with temperatures well above the runner's ideal and bright sunshine Victor Kipchirchir to a finish time of 2:17:03 hours. His compatriots Antony Maina and Philip Kirui completed the podium before Thomas Punz was the first Austrian to cross the finish line. The Ethiopian was the fastest marathon runner Gadise Negesa in a time of 2:46:37 hours ahead of the German Julia Brugger (2:56:23).

The opened for the first time 11th Salzburg Women's Run the three-day running festival in the city of Mozart on Friday evening. 1,164 runners enjoyed an outstanding running experience in the low sun. Salzburg's top runner Cornelia Moser won both the 5.5-kilometer Salzburg Women's Run and the Hervis-10K Salzburg CityRun and the special combination of the two events.
