These was the Running Festival in Mozart City around the 21st edition of Salzburg Marathon (12 May 2024)
Once again, optimal spring weather ensured highly atmospheric days at the Running Festival in Mozart City. With 8,578 registered participants with 86 different nationalities, a new registration record has been celebrated.
In terms of sport, the weekend was all about the appearance of Salzburg's best marathon runner, Peter Herzog. After difficult years with injuries and illnesses, the Pinzgau native managed to build up well for the Vienna City Marathon and make a controlled comeback there. He was enthusiastic about the return and decided to run another marathon in Salzburg three weeks later in slower tempo. Nevertheless, his performance of 2:21:46 hours was enough to cross the finish line as the winner of the 21st Salzburg Marathon ahead of Kenyan Peter Wanjiru. The victory in the women's marathon went to Hungarian triathlete Eva Kovacs in a time of 3:06:06 hours.
The winner of the Sparkasse Half Marathon, Daniel Estrada from Chile, was the first South American winner of a competition at the Running Festival. Swiss runner Elena Eichenberger won the women's race two minutes ahead of Eva Wutti, who was second in the Salzburg Women's Run as well. There, Annika Leineweber shone with the fastest time ever achieved on the 5.5-kilometer course of 18:41 minutes. Leineweber, a German studying in Salzburg, secured victory in the combined ranking, which she secured with second place in the Hervis-10K CityRun behind the Swede Carolina Johnson.
Women's race series winner Cornelia Stöckl-Moser convinced with extraordinary performances in the Salzburg Women's Run and the Hervis-10K City Run as running while pregnant.
For the first time, the start of the Salzburg Marathon, the Sparkasse Half Marathon and the Powerade Relay Marathon took place on the “Staatsbrücke“ with a wonderful view of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Salzburg's Old Town with Hohensalzburg Fortress at its peak. This innovation further improved the quality of the experience for running enthusiasts.
