Salzburg Marathon certified organic for the eighth time

The Salzburg Marathon has been awarded the official organic certificate for the eighth time in a row. This is unique in the marathon world and among Austrian sporting events. The inspection was carried out this year by the SLK, which, among other things, carefully examined the five organic meals that were eaten in the new Salzburg “organic village”.

Flagship of Salzburg

With the innovative idea of a Salzburg "organic village" in which the participants in the Salzburg Marathon's sporting competitions and all Salzburg residents are spoiled with organic delicacies throughout the weekend, the running festival in the city of Mozart has "reached the next milestone in the high-quality catering for our athletes and spectators”, as organizer Johannes Langer emphasizes. 54% of the cultivated area in the province of Salzburg is farmed organically, which means that the “most beautiful province in Austria” achieves the top value within the European Union. “The local, organic cuisine is a flagship of the region. It is very important to us that the advantages of the Salzburg location and its surroundings are optimally represented at the Salzburg Marathon,” explains Langer.

Culinary organic pleasure

“Sport and health are very closely linked. Environmentally conscious and healthy nutrition is the basis for successful running. That's why I would like to thank the Salzburg Marathon for walking this path of sustainability together," explains the deputy managing director of Bio Austria Salzburg, Peter Hecht, and promises: "The participants in the Salzburg Marathon and all Salzburg residents will spend the weekend both sporty and culinary enjoy!"

Five local specialties

The five dishes tasted in the Salzburg organic village each represent a specialty from the Salzburg districts. The ingredients used for the dishes are all seasonally available and come from regional and organic cultivation. The organic control center of the SLK visited the Salzburg Marathon chefs Thomas Verwanger, Gerhard Schachner, Fabio Winkelhofer and Martin Studeny in advance and inspected the Salzburg "organic village" on Friday. Then DI Maria Grill from the SLK Bio-Zertification presented the organic certificate.

The bananas and oranges offered at the aid stations of the Salzburg Marathon are high-quality, organic, fair-trade goods.
