The Salzburg organic village in the Salzburg Marathon City in the Kurgarten puts a culinary icing on the running experience at the Running Festival in the City of Mozart 2018. For the ninth time in a row, Salzburg’s largest active sports event will be issued with an official organic certificate after the positive test result by the SLK.

advantage of the region

The high-quality organic tasting, based on regionally grown and seasonally available products, is a special feature of the running festival in the city of Mozart. With the Salzburg organic village, Salzburg's largest active sports event represents one of the advantages of the state of Salzburg with great authenticity. “The approximately 7,000 runners from 80 nations are ambassadors who carry the advantages of Salzburg and the region to the whole world. 57% of the entire cultivation area in the state of Salzburg is used for organic cultivation. This puts the state of Salzburg in the top position within the European Union,” emphasizes Salzburg Marathon organizer Johannes Langer.

“The motive for many recreational runners to regularly lace up their running shoes is the positive effects of sport on health. So it harmonises perfectly that the participants in the running festival in the city of Mozart are offered high-quality nutrition that is based on organic production and the ingredients come from the region. It is a fantastic offer that there are three dishes to choose from in the Salzburg organic village. The emotional finish right in front of Mirabell Palace and then this culinary delight in front of a fantastic backdrop in the spa gardens - that's an unbeatable package," says DI Andreas Schwaighofer, Managing Director of Bio Austria Salzburg, who has been maintaining the partnership between the Salzburg Marathon and Bio Austria Salzburg emphasizes.

Check by SLK

In 2010, the Salzburg Marathon was the first sporting event in Austria to be officially certified as organic. Since then, the award has been repeated annually, in 2018 for the ninth time in a row. In this area, the Salzburg Marathon achieves a unique selling point among marathon events worldwide. "In advance, we check according to national regulations whether all required guidelines are being observed, check all documents and recipes and check the corresponding implementation on site. It must be ensured that all dishes consist exclusively of organic food and have been purchased from qualitative organic farms. The Salzburg Marathon and chef Thomas Verwanger did this extremely well, also because they work with regional companies and suppliers,” explains DI Maria Grill from the SLK, who will present the organic certificate to the organizer on Friday, May 4th on the basis of the audit that has already been carried out becomes. “One should not forget that it is much more difficult for an individual event like the Salzburg Marathon to consistently implement an organic focus and to guarantee the corresponding quality than in standard kitchens and businesses. The organizer of the Salzburg Marathon has a lot of experience in this regard and has recently taken on a great deal of organizational effort to meet this challenge," praises Schwaighofer.

Three dishes to choose from

Walser vegetable Schliaferl (croissants), Salzburg organic meatballs with pasta and tomato sauce as well as chilled organic beef with gugaruz (corn) and beetle beans. These are the three delicacies that participants and spectators can look forward to in the Salzburg organic village. “We want to create emotions. When the runner crosses the finish line, it creates emotions that are remembered for a long time. If you can reward yourself with high-quality, regional organic food after the effort of the run, including the preparation in training, that also creates emotion," explains Thomas Verwanger, who is responsible for the catering at the running festival in the city of Mozart and has been working intensively since mid-March working on the preparations. "The secret is the quality of the suppliers and we have once again managed to make an excellent selection," he emphasizes.
