Well prepared for high temperatures

It's a hot marathon spring - in the truest sense of the word. As with the marathons over the past few weekends, the weather forecast for the 15th Salzburg Marathon predicts bright sunshine with slightly cloudy weather and high temperatures right at the start. As great as this view is for all spectators who will ensure an atmospheric setting at the running festival in the city of Mozart, it is not quite ideal for a long run lasting several hours. Proper preparation is the secret to running a marathon well, even at high temperatures, and to enjoying the finish at Mirabellplatz in bright sunshine.

Drink a lot, but not just water

“The most important thing in a high-temperature marathon is staying hydrated. That means drinking a lot before the run and drinking fluids every 20 minutes from the start. That means helping yourself at all refreshment stations and not waiting until you feel thirsty. It is essential not only to drink water, but also drinks containing electrolytes," explains Dr. Holger Förster, Head of the Medical Service at the Salzburg Marathon. "If you only drink water, the lost electrolytes and energy cannot be replaced and the blood becomes thinner," warns the sports doctor. He also recommends wearing sunscreen in direct sunlight to avoid heat stroke.

Additional tubs

Organizer Johannes Langer reacted to the weather forecast and set up additional tubs with cold water and some showers along the route. "It's a welcome way to cool off for the runners," says Langer.
