International victories in the Sparkasse half marathon
The victories in the Sparkasse half marathon went to Radim Picek from the Czech Republic and Renate Wyss from Switzerland. Picek prevailed in a time of 1:12:21 hours ahead of Lukas Mautner from Vienna, who was 16 seconds behind, and Josef Diensthuber from Burghausen. Radim Picek was very satisfied after the race. Four weeks ago he competed in the Rotterdam Marathon but felt bad and had to give up. The runner from Ostrava opted for the Sparkasse Half Marathon at the 15th Salzburg Marathon for a second chance in this running spring. "A very good choice," smiled the 35-year-old.
Clear thing for Wyss
Renate Wyss from Switzerland, who took part in the marathon world championships in Moscow, won the women's race in a time of 1:26:37 hours, just over a minute ahead of Abbey McGhee from Scotland and Sandrine Abgottspon from Switzerland. "I love Salzburg. And I love the route of the Salzburg Marathon - city and nature combined. The orange carpet in front of Hellbrunn Palace was simply a great experience,” enthused the 32-year-old from Basel, who traveled to the Salzburg Marathon with a group of 25 runners from the city on the Rhine. Wyss now trains significantly less than years ago and works as a physiotherapist. The best Austrian, Andrea Oberbichler (Union Raika Lienz), second last year, missed a place on the podium by just five seconds.
Strong performance despite high temperatures
As the half marathon progressed, the temperatures kept rising. Despite the challenging conditions, the runners fought their weaker self and fought for every second on the beautiful route with a view of Hohensalzburg Fortress, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Salzburg's old town and Leopoldskron Palace. They were thanked for the "torture" with respectable finish times around the two-hour mark. Many reached their destination and stayed under two hours - a great thing!
Paralympics star Thomas Geierspichler also completed a half marathon. He needed a good hour for his 21.0975 kilometer home race.
