
Kenyan triple victory at the Salzburg Marathon
The grand finale of the Salzburg Marathon 2019 - the marathon competition - ended with the Kenyan Running Festival. The three top runners from Kenya, Victor Kipchirchir, Anthony-Karinga Maina and Philip Kirui, celebrated a triple success. The women's victory went to an Ethiopian.
Victor Kipchirchir won Marathon
The running festival in the city of Mozart was transformed into the Kenyan running festival for a short time during today's marathon competition. The Kenyan Victor Kipchirchir was crowned the big winner of these games. He completed the marathon distance in a time of 2:17:02 hours, relegating his compatriots Antony-Karinga Maina (2:22:37) and Philip Kirui (2:28:21) to second and third place.
Gadise-Gudisa Negese won the women's
The only 21-year-old Ethiopian Gadise-Gudisa Negese, who was already considered a favorite in the run-up to the competition, confirmed this role as a favorite and won the women's marathon with a time of 2:46:36 hours. It was her first official marathon ever - an incredible achievement. Second place went to Germany's Julia Brugger, who also made her marathon debut. She just missed her target time of about 2:50 hours with 2:56:21. Third place went to Irmine Schatz (3:23:24), who was the best Austrian.
Thomas Punz and Irmine Schatz best Austrians
Thomas Punz ended up in fourth place, making him the best Austrian at this year's Salzburg Marathon. He reached the finish line in 2:44:03 hours. Less than a minute later, Christian Doppler crossed the finish line in fifth place, making him the second best runner from Austria. His time: 2:44:51 hours.
Fastest Austrian runner at the Salzburg Marathon 2019 was Irmine Schatz. With a time of 3:23:24 she took the great third place in the women's classification.
